We, the M-Shaped Society

M Shaped Society

Wow it's funny. At least 65% are born and bred here. For once this figure really tells me the true story. As I've mentioned before, never believe the media. Thus I am banking on the fact that 65% is actually an overly estimated figure, which makes me laugh.

Singapore has become an M-Shaped Society whereby theres the rich, and the poor. What used to be middle income earners have dissipated and moved downwards. Sure the GNP shows fantastic figures, heck we're not even affected by the recession due to the F1 Grand Prix, but surely it's still almost as bad as a recession.

Singapore has always headed towards the direction of forming bilateral ties, and to drive it's economy. But more than any country in the world, Singapore wants to prove herself. Well that's the point. It's not Singapore that wants to prove herself. It's the government who wants to move towards that direction. Afterall, they're the leaders. We just follow.

We have single handedly cultivated a society where the strong eat the weak and nobody gives a shit about giving birth to babies. At least not enough. Standard of living has become so tough that the poor cannot afford to give their children a comfortable life, and the rich do not have the motivation to give birth to more.

Having a falling birth rate means having an aging population in Singapore's context, because of the differences in mentality with the people from the past, and the present. And to ensure that the economy does not back slide, the govt decided that inviting foreign talent would bring in growth, bringing in opportunities. Portrayed as the people who would give a different perspective on things, and provide a challenging environment to the locals, these people eventually took over many locals. Some may argue that rice bowls have been snatched, while others say it's just the difference in capabilities and if you had it, your rice bowl will never be taken away.

But yet I've yet to come across any country that makes it so easy for foreigners to live there. We've become a place where foreigners thrive. Why would any local feel a sense of belonging when their neighbours are foreigners, or colleagues/bosses are foreigners, retail and customer service staff are foreigners, classmates are foreigners. And these numbers are never diminishing. 6 million people? where 50% are foreigners? That's a joke. Do you want foreigners to serve NS as well? Because I always thought that NSF fought for the nation, for the countrymen. Not for foreigners. But that's what I had always thought, maybe it's different now.

On another note, Christie has now gone to play his part as a defender of our nation. Having dinner with friends from secondary sch definitely reminded me of the good times, where we were young.......er

Those were the days of ignorance and bliss. Laughing back on the good old days, we were also brought crashing back into reality. The life that we will lead from now on can never be turned around. There's probably no rewind or reset buttons...

Yea... There's probably no rewind or reset buttons...
