ok, it's abt global dimming. we all know what global warming is right? greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide releases into our earth's atmosphere clouding the ozone layer with it and trapping heat from the sun -> temperature rises -> icebergs melt -> sea lvl increases -> flooding in low areas and droughts -> famine -> die
ok. now that we all know what global warming is, what is global dimming? climatologists found out that over the past 50years, the sunlight coming into earth has been reduced greatly, almost 20% in Israel. they have continued this routinely tests over the past century in measuring evaporation rate, and they realised that compared to the results a hundred years ago, evaporation has decreased alot. evaporation as we all have learnt in p.sch, can be sped up with increased temperature. but scientists say that the dominant component in evaporation is sunlight. a lower activity in evaporation means that less sunlight is able to enter earth. so what does sunlight have to do with anything?
the bad drought in Ethiopia in the 1970s was said to have been caused by poor maintenance of farms and such. but they realised that it was due to global dimming. the major component causing global dimming are the particles that emit from fuel burning. so countries stepped up on burning fuels cleaner so that such particles will decrease.
one scientist did a study during the september attack, when no aircrafts were flying, so no smoke was produced from the planes. he found out that the temperature range had increased by 1 deg celsius. but on the normal days, it was always less than 1deg celsius. that was then when climatologists realised that global dimming, slowed down the process of global warming. means, global warming increases temperature, global dimming reduce the temperature from the sun. but now that measures of global dimming has been in effect, means only got global warming + more sunlight.
this means a double whammy, cuz global warming traps heat in our atmosphere. and now the temperature rises even higher, then global warming effect makes it worse. they had predicted that no more than 5deg celsius would increase in the next 100 years, but now that they have realised this, it could be 10deg C. imagine singapore with 42deg C 100years from now. we can bake cookies in our cars!
they said that by 2030, something has to be done, or else everything will be irreversable, and by 2100, the temperatures could increase 10 deg C from now. which is why im thankful i'll get to die before it reaches 2100. i dont wanna experience being cooked alive.
